Things To Personalize With Vinyl
In a world of fast fashion and trends that come and go just as abruptly as they appear, real style and taste have been put on the backburner. However, there is one solution to this modern problem: personalization.
Nothing expresses individuality better than something you have thought out and designed yourself. Cultivating one’s own appeal and aesthetic sense through trial and error process of customization is a fruitful process.
Recently, vinyl has become the face of personalization. This simple synthetic material has pushed the boundaries of arts and crafts, and even car and home customization. Vinyl or polyvinyl chloride is one of the most versatile products that can be used and is now found in almost everything. Let’s look at different types of vinyl and how you can use them to upgrade ordinary objects and materials.
- Leather Goods
- Fabrics in Homes
- Phone/ Laptop Stickers
- Home Décor
- Wedding/ Event Décor
- Signage and Decals
For Heat Transfer Vinyl
Every kind of vinyl has an adhesive, but the properties of the adhesive may differ and hence so will the use of that vinyl. Heat transfer vinyl or HTV has heat activated adhesive, which means that it will stick to a surface when heat is applied to it. This vinyl is compatible with any surface that can take heat but works best with fabrics that are made of cotton and polyester.
HTV also comes in many colors, patterns, and finishes so there is a lot that you can work with. Here are a few ideas on how and where to use HTV.
The most popular use for HTV is customizing apparel. From t-shirts, to socks, pants and even onesies for babies. There is a plethora of options you can opt for in this category and make stunning, one-of-a-kind clothing. Come up with original artwork and use HTV to transfer it onto shirts and start your own clothing brand.
You can also revamp your old or worn out clothes and apply vinyl decals. This method is both eco-friendly and helps promote sustainable fashion by making upcycled clothes the new normal. You can also specifically design holiday themed shirts for the family and create a joyful environment.
2. Leather Goods:
Leather is a material that exudes style and class that will never fade. It has truly stood against the test of time and is still seen as chic and elegant. If you are looking to personalize something that is considered timeless then leather is the way to go. You can add vinyl lettering to cardholders, bags, keychains, and wallets.
Add your initials or company name on these goods to either distribute or keep for yourself. Giving customized gifts to friends, family and clients leaves a lasting impression and helps relationships blossom.
Although wood can be personalized by using both adhesive and HTV, the latter produces better results as it adheres to wood seamlessly. Whether at home or at a café or restaurant, wood signs give a traditional and antique touch to any space they are put in. Hence, they make wonderful additions as décor, and they can really liven up the atmosphere.
Wooden trays, cutting boards or charcuterie boards can also be decorated using HTV. Add vinyl designs or quotes to the board to make wonderful gifts or serving platters when your guests come over. They are certainly going to leave your guests awestruck by both your hospitality and your creativity!
Other than apparel, HTV can help you customize accessories as well. Tote bags are seen everywhere these days. However, if you wish to stand out, create your own using HTV! Mix and match with different textures and colors of vinyl to come up with something truly special. You can also experiment with hats and caps and come up with something that resonates with your style and personality.
5. Fabrics In Homes:
Various fabrics are used in home for decorating it, for example in pillowcases, napkins and so on. You have a nice couch and a plush pillow on it. Why not decorate it with vinyl to match the rest of the upholstery? Floor cushion covers can also be revamped this way.
You can make amazing bed and couch throws using HTV. If bling is your thing then glitter HTV is the best for you. Match it with your bedspread and you will have a bedroom like no one else’s.
For Adhesive Vinyl
Unlike HTV, adhesive vinyl does not adhere to fabric but it does work with surfaces like plastic, metal, ceramic, paper and basically any dry, smooth, clean and hard surface. Therefore, it has multiple uses and personalizes almost anything.
There are two types of adhesive vinyl: Permanent and Removable. The adhesive in both has different strengths.
Permanent vinyl is more durable with a strong adhesive and is used for outdoor projects. Removable vinyl is used indoors because it may not sustain harsh weather. It also has weaker adhesive. Let’s look at some ideas on how we use these vinyl films.
Everyone loves a nice mug to pour their daily coffee or tea in. Oftentimes, people even hoard them because the different hues and designs they have on them make them irresistible. Even a funny quote attracts customers. But why spend so much on them when you can simply make one for yourself at home.
You can custom make your designs with whatever font, color, or vector you want and stick them onto your mug. Not only that, but you can apply vinyl to glass and tumblers as well. Tumblers have become increasingly popular for having drinks on the go. Design your own at home and try out different patterns and styles like glitter, matte or satin to see what fits best.
2. Phone/ Laptop Stickers:
Who doesn’t love a nice cover or sticker for their electronic device? Not only does it look hip and cool, it also protects your device from scratches. You can print out vinyl stickers of your favorite movie, band, artist or even art piece and attach it on top of your phone or laptop. You can even create your own artwork and stick it on as a vinyl decal.
3. Home Décor:
The great thing about vinyl is that it can be used almost anywhere. It can even be used as a substitute for wallpaper! If you are looking to brighten up your home space, wall decals of your design are an excellent choice. This product is extremely versatile, and you can even use it to label your spices and grains.
Moreover, vinyl can also be used to decorate your patio or garden, as it can be used outdoors as well. You may even decorate boring windows and picture frames with decals of your choice. Even vases and trays can be upcycled using adhesive vinyl. Choose from an extensive range of adhesive vinyl and pick one that suits your home the best.
4. Wedding/ Event Décor:
Vinyl is an excellent choice for unique invites and signs at your next big event. On weddings, you can even use them as party favors and on name cards of your guests. For such events, go with gold or satin vinyl for a regal and elegant look. For birthday and holiday decorations, you can go with bold colors and patterns for your vinyl decorations.
Notebooks and scrapbooks alike can be customized according to your taste. Some people have even started small businesses that sell personalized notebooks. Add your favorite decals or design one yourself and stick it on your notebook.
Scrapbooks make heartfelt gifts. If a loved one’s birthday is coming up, grab your pictures, your notebook, and some vinyl to create a truly memorable gift.
You can even decorate albums and display your photos in style – something that no one else can possess. This will make your special day even more momentous.
6. Signage And Decals:
Adhesive vinyl can also be used by small businesses to display their logos and signage outside their outlet. A visible logo in bright colors attracts customers and leaves a lasting imprint on the minds of the people.
It can also be used on decals for cars such as a design, picture or quote for the rear windshield or doors. You can even advertise your product or business, or paste your logo for maximum exposure using vinyl on your vehicle.
Basics Of Applying HTV
Heat transfer vinyl requires a heat source for the adhesive to work and you can use a heat press, iron or even a blow-dryer in some cases. Make sure to check what temperature to set your device at, what pressure to use and how long you should apply heat for. Following is the general application process which may differ.
- First, cut out your design using either an electric cutter or scissors, and weed away excess vinyl.
- Transfer your design onto your selected fabric and make sure it is aligned in the correct position.
- Finally, cover the design with parchment paper and using an iron or heat press, apply pressure and heat. This will make the decal stick and your project is ready to use.
Basics Of Applying Adhesive Vinyl
Adhesive vinyl is simpler than HTV as it does not require a heat source. All you have to do is cut your design using either a craft cutter or scissor, and weed out excess vinyl. Then apply transfer tape on top and transfer your design to your surface of choice. Smooth out the design using a squeegee to avoid bubbling and remove transfer tape. You have a ready to use end product.
