One of the categories in which a range of products is crucial is Heat Transfer Vinyl. Since fashion and trends are constantly changing, you need to stay up-to-date and that is where HTV comes in. This blog opens the doors for you to explore the variety in HTV and how you can utilize it for your own benefit.
What Is HTV?
Heat transfer vinyl or HTV is a vinyl polymer that is specifically used on compatible fabrics and at times other materials as well. This specialty vinyl possesses a heat sensitive adhesive that can be activated using a heat press, iron, or a blow dryer. Since hot temperatures are used, the fabric has to be able to withstand it.
Therefore, cotton, polyester and cotton/poly blends are the best choice in this regard. You can easily make designs of your choice and add them to clothes, bags, hats or even socks for a personalized touch.
Types Of HTV And Their Uses
Heat transfer vinyl boasts a marvelous range of options to meet the needs of every craftsperson. Here are a few varieties that you would love to work with:
1. Glossy HTV
This is the most standard heat transfer vinyl that is widely used by crafters. It has a sheen to it that is highly alluring and is perfect to be used on bags, hats, pillows, shirts, T-shirts, polos, crafts and home decor. It is made up of high quality polyurethane and is the most commonly used HTV. It is perfect for novices in the world of crafts as it is very easy to cut, weed and apply.
2. Matte HTV
This is another commonly used HTV that has a muted surface without any shine. Available in a variety of colors, it looks best against a colorful background that sets a vivid contrast. If you like your crafts to be sober and sophisticated, go for matte HTV. It does not shimmer and can be easily layered. It looks amazing when paired with glitter HTV for a mix and match look.
3. Reflective HTV
Shiny and fashionable, Reflective HTV radiates vibrantly whenever it comes in contact with a light source, hence it is a popular choice for apparel and safety gear. Due to its micro glass beads construction, this vinyl has high luminosity. You can create one-of-a-kind striking decals with it on any garment of your choice.
It is available in many stunning colors including neon green, rose red and even rainbow! If you want your decals to create a psychedelic effect and be highly visible in a light source, this is the go to vinyl.

This beautiful vinyl film, crafted with high grade polyurethane, comes in both plain and monotone backgrounds overlaid with tiny flecks of glitter. It is preferred by those who want their crafts to be flashy and shining.
It is best for upcycling your old boring clothes with a little shimmer and extravagance. It can also be layered with other vinyl films however, glitter HTV can only be used as a top layer.
5. Metallic HTV
For futuristic and dazzling decals, Metallic HTV is the best choice. This film has a glistening metal-like surface that blends smoothly with the substrate and upgrades it. You can add it to hats and even socks for a cool and edgy look. Vinyl like this is hard to come by with varieties like soft metallic and regular metallic. Mix and match it with glossy or patterned HTV to create amazing designs.

This vinyl is available in many different colors and can even be layered with other vinyl films but the rule is the same as that of glitter, it can only be used as the top layer. Due to its exquisite look, it is slightly thicker than other types of HTV but is in no way difficult to cut, weed and apply.
Following is the HTV application process in a nutshell:
- First, pre-press your fabric and use a lint roller on it to get the best possible result.
- Prepare your HTV design on a software.
- Print and cut the design and weed off any excess vinyl using a weeding tool.
- Place the decal on the surface at the position you want it to be and put a Teflon sheet or parchment paper on top of it.
- Using an iron or heat press, apply ample heat and pressure according to the requirements of the vinyl.
- If the HTV is a ‘warm peel’ you can immediately take off the sheet but if it is a ‘cold peel’ you must wait for the HTV to completely cool down.
- Finally, after peeling off the carrier sheet, you now have a new customized project which is ready to use.
